[L-USA] Carving Media

From: John De Wolf (Jdewolf@mail.icrsurvey.com) | Date: 1999-06-09 09:36:24 UTC-04:00
I'm sure this has been discussed in the past, but that must have been before my time. I'm ready to graduate to larger stamps than those I carve in the little white erasers.

I've heard of Uncle Walter's, EZ-Cut, ... Are there any others? What has everyone's experience been with each? What do you recommend? How can I get my hands on the stuff? I'm striking out at the stores in my area.

Thanks for your input.

My advice, and this is my opinion only but I would stay
far far away from Speedy Cut. My personal favorite is
PZ Kut. I have never tried Uncle Walters but heard it
is good. There is a list of resources at:
http://www.negia.net/~unity/prod.html

After the Speedy Cut mess I started using Nasco Safety
Cut which I liked a lot (compared to Speedy Cut) but
then found PZ Kut which I like a lot better than
anything else I've tried.

One thought regarding carving larger stamps: keep in mind that the small
notebooks in some letterboxes (3" x 5" or even less) can't accommodate large
stamps.

I have not yet PERSONALLY started carving, but I have MANY friends who do,
and I have heard nothing but wonderful things about Uncle Walter's. You can
SUPPOSEDLY carve better detail using it. I have heard that you can also carve
on both sides. It also has no surface coating, so it takes ink really well.
(The EZ-Cut stuff for some reason, doesn;t take the ink well, I'm told).
Here's the info on Uncle Walter's Carving Block:

Sizes available:
2.5 X 2.5 X .75
4 X 6 X .75
2.5 X 5 X .75
9 X12 X .75

Order through Faith Company, P.O. Box 35, Amesbury, Ma 01913, or call
1-800-370--683.

Not personally affiliated, yadda yadda yadda.

John:

Speedy-Cut (same company as Speedball cutters) supplies larger (4" x 6"
I think). However, I hate to mention this, as I feel the product if
inferior (crumbles) - however, with larger image comes larger detail?

Sounds like Uncle W's is the best bet.

Erik
